Are RTA cabinets good quality? What actually determines it
“RTA” describes how a cabinet is packed and shipped — not what it is made of. A well-built RTA cabinet is every bit as durable as a pre-assembled one. Two RTA cabinets can look identical in a photo and be built very differently, and the difference tends to show up a year or two later: in how the boxes hold up, whether the doors crack at the joints, and how the finish wears. Three things separate a good RTA cabinet from a disappointing one.
1. The box: plywood, not particleboard
The box is the foundation of the cabinet. We build only with plywood boxes and solid-wood face frames. We do not supply particleboard or MDF (“press board”) boxes, because they tend to swell and break down if they get wet — not ideal for a cabinet under a sink. On framed cabinets, a 1/2-inch plywood box is generally enough, because the solid-wood face frame carries much of the load and keeps the cabinet square. On frameless (full-access) cabinets, there is no face frame, so the box itself has to hold everything straight — that is where 3/4-inch plywood helps. We also prefer real plywood shelves over particleboard shelves, which can sag over time.
2. The doors: where quality really shows
Doors vary the most. On flat slab doors, the core is typically an engineered core fully sealed on both faces, so it is stable and easy to clean. On shaker and raised-panel doors, you will see three constructions in the Chicago market: all-HDF doors (molded in one piece, so no joints to open up, but softer than wood); solid-wood frame with an HDF or MDF center panel (the most common painted-door construction, chosen because an engineered panel stays dimensionally stable); and, at the top tier, a solid-wood frame with a painted plywood center panel — painted first, then set into the frame, so even if the panel shifts slightly you are far less likely to ever see an unpainted edge.
