What is a slim shaker cabinet?

Slim shaker vs our standard shaker

Both are five-piece doors on the same kind of cabinet box, so the difference is mostly in how the kitchen looks and what it costs.

• The frame. Our standard shaker doors have 3-1/2″ stiles and rails. Slim shaker has a frame of about 1 inch, so the center panel takes up most of the door.
• The look. Standard shaker feels classic and works in almost any house. Slim shaker feels more modern and lighter, and it pairs well with long bar pulls and simple countertops.
• The price. Our lowest-priced white shaker sits one price level below slim shaker. Dove White, Aston Green, Iron Black and Petit White are in our Most Popular level. White Oak look, Amber Oak look, Vidar Onyx, Vidar Pearl and the other Petit colors are in our Premium level, and Vidar Oak is in our High-End level.
• Stock. Both are stocked lines here in Chicago. Most orders in either style are ready in 3 to 5 days.

Slim Shaker Dove White

Dove White is our lead slim shaker color. It is a soft white, a little warmer than a bright paint white, so it doesn’t look cold next to wood floors or a warm countertop. It works as an all-white kitchen, and it pairs well with a wood look on the lowers or the island. Matching bathroom vanities come in the same door.

Slim Shaker White Oak look

A light, natural wood-grain finish on the same slim door. White Oak is the name of the color, not the wood: the door has a solid birch frame and a wood-grain finish. Slim Amber Oak look

Slim Amber Oak is built the same way as our White Oak look, with a warmer honey-toned wood-grain finish. It suits people who want the feel of a golden oak kitchen on a cleaner, modern door. Like White Oak, the name describes the color; the finish is a wood grain, not solid oak.

Slim Aston Green

A painted green on the slim door. Green cabinets look best when there is enough light and some white or wood around them, so Aston Green often goes on an island, a pantry wall or a bar area, with Dove White on the rest of the kitchen.

Slim Iron Black

A painted black slim door for a bold kitchen or an island that should stand out. On the Iron Black door, both the frame and the center panel are HDF. Ask to see it in the showroom; black looks different in daylight and under kitchen lights.

Vidar Oak, Vidar Onyx and Vidar Pearl

The Vidar slim shaker doors have a visible frame of about 1 inch on the front, the same slim look as our other slim colors. Vidar Oak has a natural wood finish; Vidar Onyx and Vidar Pearl are painted. The doors and face frames are solid wood, the boxes are 1/2″ 7-ply plywood, and the drawers are 5/8″ solid wood dovetail. Vidar Oak is our highest price level for slim shaker; Onyx and Pearl are in our Premium level.

Forevermark Petit: White, Sand, Oak, Brown and Blue

Petit is the slim shaker collection from Forevermark, and we stock all five colors: Petit White and Petit Blue in paint, and Petit Sand, Petit Oak and Petit Brown in wood-grain finishes. How our slim shaker doors and boxes are built

A slim door looks simple, so the way it is built matters more than on a busy door. Here is what you get, line by line.

• Door frame: solid birch on Dove White, White Oak look, Amber Oak look and Aston Green; solid wood on Vidar Oak, Onyx and Pearl; 3/4″ solid birch on all Forevermark Petit colors; HDF on Iron Black.
• Face frame: solid birch on every slim line except Vidar, which has a solid wood face frame.
• Cabinet box: 1/2″ plywood on every slim line (1/2″ A-grade plywood on Petit, 1/2″ 7-ply plywood on Vidar). No particleboard boxes.
• Shelves: 3/4″ plywood.
• Drawers: dovetail drawer boxes in solid wood (5/8″ solid birch on Petit, 5/8″ solid wood on Vidar).
• Hinges and drawer slides: soft-close on every cabinet, no upgrade needed.

The center panel: two options

Because the frame is so narrow, the center panel is most of the door, and it is what you see and touch. Slim shaker center panels come in two options:

• HDF panel. High-density fiberboard is smooth, flat and stable, so paint and wood-grain finishes go on evenly and the panel doesn’t move with the seasons the way solid wood can.
• Plywood core with HDF on both faces. A solid-wood plywood core sandwiched between two HDF faces. This is the highest-quality and most expensive option: the plywood core makes it strong and durable, and the HDF faces give the smoothest surface for paint or stain, so it has the best-looking finish.

One honest note on the wood looks: White Oak, Amber Oak and the Petit Sand, Oak and Brown are color names. Those doors have a wood-grain finish, not solid oak.

Who slim shaker suits

• Modern and transitional kitchens that want something cleaner than classic shaker without going to a flat slab door.
• Small kitchens and condos. A narrow frame makes a wall of cabinets look lighter, which helps in a small room or an open plan where the kitchen is always in view.
• Two-tone kitchens. Slim colors mix easily: Dove White uppers with a wood look below, or a green or black island in a white kitchen.
• Rentals and homes going on the market that need to look current in listing photos and still be priced sensibly.

Who it may not suit: very traditional kitchens with heavy crown molding and ornate trim, where a slim door can look out of place. In those kitchens Charleston White or classic White Shaker is usually the better match.

Slim shaker vs frameless slab cabinets

People who like slim shaker often look at flat slab doors too. The difference: a slab door is one flat piece with no frame at all, and frameless (European-style) boxes have no face frame, so the doors cover the whole front. That gives the most minimal look, but a big flat surface with no edge detail can show fingerprints and small dings more. Slim shaker keeps a thin frame, which adds a bit of shadow and softness to the front of the kitchen. Slim shaker also sits on our standard face-frame boxes, so sizes, fillers and modifications work the same way as the rest of our lines. Chicago apartment kitchen: Slim Shaker Dove White (2026)

This Chicago kitchen is about 15 minutes from our Chicago showroom, and Sergei came out personally to measure it. The measurements were tricky: one wall is very short, and the attic ceiling slopes down over the cabinets, as you can see in the photo above. Sergei used a laser level to work out the largest wall cabinets that would fit under the slope. The owner received the cabinets in less than a week. See this kitchen on our Logan Square page.

Two-tone Chicago kitchen: Dove White uppers, White Oak look lowers (2026)

In this Chicago kitchen, 42-inch Slim Shaker Dove White uppers frame a lift-up cabinet above the window over the farmhouse sink, with Slim Shaker White Oak base cabinets below. We cut the farm sink base in our shop to fit the customer’s sink. The homeowner skipped a full-size refrigerator for two 30-inch undercounter drawer fridges and a glass-door beverage fridge, so every wall gets a full-length countertop. Photos shared with the customer’s permission and lightly retouched to remove countertop clutter.

Long Grove: Slim Shaker Dove White, full-height layout (2026)

In January 2026 we installed Slim Shaker Dove White cabinets in a Long Grove home with a full-height, symmetrical layout and several custom-built pieces to match the space. Small modifications like these give a more custom look without the price of full custom cabinetry. See the Long Grove kitchen project.

Sizes and configurations

• Base cabinets 6″ to 42″ wide, blind bases up to 45″, lazy Susan bases 33″ and 36″.
• Wall cabinets 30″, 36″ and 42″ tall, plus 12″ glass-door uppers for stacking above standard wall cabinets.
• Custom depth on request: cabinets with drawers can be made 21″, 18″, 15″ or 12″ deep (12″ uses 9″ drawer glides), and door-only cabinets down to about 4″. Blind corner cabinets can be cut; lazy Susan and oven or appliance cabinets can’t. This adds 1 to 2 days; ask us for pricing.
• Bathroom vanities in the same slim door, so the kitchen and bathrooms can match.
• Cabinets come assembled or flat-pack (RTA). Oversized pieces such as corner sink bases or lazy Susans can sometimes be assembled at your home if they won’t fit through the door.

The cabinet boxes are 1/2 inch plywood with solid birch face frames and dovetail solid-wood drawers. Most slim door frames are solid birch, the Vidar doors are solid wood, and the Iron Black door is HDF. Center panels are either HDF or a plywood core faced with HDF on both sides. White Oak, Amber Oak and the Petit wood colors are wood-grain finishes, not solid oak.

What slim shaker colors are in stock in Chicago?
